To think that our parents were worried about us watching too much television!
Our use of digital devices such as computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones has introduced an entirely new challenge to our eyes. How can we reduce this effect?
At Wills Street Eyecare, we prescribe the latest in digital eyewear to achieve each of the following goals:
1. Prevent vision fatigue. Having clear vision in the distance does not mean we will find extended periods of close work easy or comfortable for the eyes! Sometimes a small prescription in spectacles, or added to your current prescription, will support your focus at the distance of the screen you are using.
2. Eliminate glare. Anti-reflective coating on modern spectacle lenses aims to reduce the glare from screens and also from overhead lighting.
3. Filter out blue light. We know that the high frequency blue light from back-lit screens causes eyestrain and confuses our circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. There are theories that it may also be causing damage to the eyes themselves. By adding a blue filter coating to your spectacle lenses, we reflect back that blue light to improve comfort and reduce the side effects of excessive exposure.
We are excited to announce that there are now non-prescription blue light filtering glasses available at Wills Street Eyecare. 'Shadez' glasses are for toddlers and children who are using screens from a young age, but do not yet require a spectacle prescription.
When you combine digital specific eyewear with blinking more often, taking regular breaks and adjusting device display settings, your eyes will feel more relaxed and comfortable throughout the day.
